If your mattress or box spring is delivered or picked up in California, your order includes an $18 recycling fee for each piece. Here is what it is and why you see it in your cart and at checkout.
What the fee is
California law (Public Resources Code 42989.1) requires every store to collect a recycling fee on each mattress and each box spring or foundation sold or delivered in the state. The amount is set by the Mattress Recycling Council and approved by CalRecycle. Since April 1, 2026, it is $18 per piece. Every retailer selling into California charges the same fee, in store or online.
Where the money goes
The fee funds Bye Bye Mattress, California's mattress recycling program. It pays for free drop-off sites and for recycling the steel, foam, fiber and wood in old mattresses. Mattress Central passes the full amount to the program and keeps none of it.
How it is counted
- One fee per mattress, and one per box spring or foundation.
- A split king or split California king set is two mattresses, so two fees.
- King and California king box springs come in two pieces, so two fees.
- A split-head mattress is one piece, so one fee.
- Adjustable bases, bed frames, furniture and bedding have no fee.
How it shows on your order
- In your cart, it is its own line, "California Mattress Recycling Fee", with the number of pieces it covers.
- At checkout, it is its own line in the order summary. On a phone, tap "Show order summary" at the top of checkout to see every line.
- The fee is not taxed.
Delivering outside California
Orders delivered to another state do not owe the fee. In your cart, answer "No" to "Delivering to California?" and the fee comes off. If it is charged on an out-of-state order, we refund it before the order ships.
Your old mattress
With white-glove delivery within 100 miles, we take away one old mattress for each new one and recycle it. Anywhere in California, you can also find a free drop-off site at byebyemattress.com.
